Bruxism
Learn the dangers of bruxism, how it is a significant risk factor for TMJ disorder, and the treatment options available to protect your teeth and jaw.
What Is Bruxism?
Bruxism is the habitual, involuntary grinding or clenching of teeth. This condition causes accelerated tooth wear, strained jaw muscles, and damaged TMJ joints over time. There are two primary types: awake bruxism, typically triggered by anxiety and stress, and sleep bruxism, which can exert forces of up to 250 pounds on the teeth.
Sleep bruxism is particularly damaging because patients are unaware it is happening and cannot consciously stop. Over time, this constant grinding wears down tooth enamel, strains the muscles of the jaw, and puts tremendous pressure on the temporomandibular joints.
Symptoms of Bruxism
Bruxism can manifest in a variety of ways, many of which patients may not immediately associate with teeth grinding. Recognizing these symptoms early is key to preventing long-term damage to your teeth and the temporomandibular joint.

Treatment for bruxism begins with a Custom Oral Appliance to protect the teeth from further damage. However, Dr. Krish goes beyond simple protection by using therapeutic TMJ devices that actively reshape the jaw over time.
These next-generation orthotic devices address the underlying cause of bruxism by bringing the jaw into proper alignment, reducing muscle tension, and allowing the temporomandibular joint to heal naturally.

Oral Appliances
The preferred method of treating obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is the CPAP machine. An alternative treatment is oral appliance therapy. One appliance looks like a mouth guard. Another dental device stabilizes the tongue.
